African Lisbon and the shadow of slavery
African Lisbon and the shadow of slavery
Lisbon has a very important African history in Europe. For example, Lisbon had an African district before all the others. On the other hand, Portugal played a central role in the black trade, introducing thousands of foreigners into the country during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The presence of African slaves was a characteristic of the Portuguese company. They were responsible for everyday life tasks as well as economic activities, helping to increase their owners’ income. We will discover the history of the African presence in the city, through representative characters, and we will also discover together the “invisible” places of slavery.
